I’ve etched the Cincinnati Reds, Dallas Cowboys, and much more not shown here. I’ve also featured some personalized mug gifts of a rose, other rose, a poem etched with a photoresist, and much more here.
Since I have been slacking on sharing photos of my projects, I figured I would share these simple etched mugs of the UK college logo and personalized with some co-workers names for gifts. This post might give you some ideas and I wanted to give you some tips to make it extra special:
- Engraving deeply into the glass makes it really stand out more so it seems extra elegant which laser engravers usually don’t do.
- Personalizing their name of course shows that it was custom made just for them and not mass produced from a machine.
- Etched the bottom with a funny saying or something meaningful to that person receiving the gift. I don’t see people do this much and think it is fun. They may not see it until they drink out of it which may be a fun surprise to them.

Benjamin Kanour, I use the Brother Scanncut, it is absolutely brilliant for all types of cutting. It cuts card, paper, vinyl, almost anything. Like I said, anything from paper, to fabric and even thin balsa wood.
They seem almost frosted what bits and sizes do you use
Love your work, ideas and tips! Thanks for sharing
Very interesting post! I love the idea for etching the bottom! Thanks!
I use a Cameo cutter. You can cut different material and even use colored pencils to draw on paper. Can’t beat the price.
Hi Eric,
I live in Namibia and cannot get hold of etching crème anywhere. Apparently there is a great difficulty exporting it from the US.
I would like to as a pharmaceutical company here to mix the crème for me.
Can you give me the precise ingredients and measurements thereof?
Maybe you have a better idea of getting hold of etching crème?
love getting ideas. thanks for sharing.
I’ve found these mugs at our Dollar Store for $1.00. Have purchased many for this purpose.
@Nadina. Sometimes they are hard to find at the Dollar Tree. I order these thru there catalog and have them shipped to my nearest store at no charge to me for shipping that is. The store will send you an email when they arrive, usually with in a week.
@Rick, I am glad you brought that up about Dollar Tree. I know they always had the best prices where you can order in bulk, but everywhere I read online, no one can find that they have them anymore. I checked the catalog probably a few times in the past few years but never see them listed.
Do you know what the SKU number is for those beer mugs?
Everyone, special thanks to Rick, he shared with me via email on how to get those low cost Dollar Tree mugs still. They don’t seem to usually have them in most stores anymore and aren’t listed on the website. I searched for the SKU 874758 and just as he tells me, the website said the same thing that they have to be ordered through the 24/7 Customer Order Support Center line.
I need some help. I have a 3 piece mirror that I have had for years. Make a long story short I cracked the lg mirror. All 3 have a floral patter. If I can copy the pattern what process do you suggest I use to frost the pattern into a new mirror? Etching cream?
@Chris, I personally recommend sandblasting, as it looks better than the cream. Large areas can be hard to get cream to have consistant etches, but if you do go that route, use a premium cream like this: https://www.glassetchingsecrets.com/Etchall-order
