It’s exciting to share these sandcarving glass projects today and feature Kay O’Neil! You might like this if you would like to expand your glass etching into other forms such as stained glass. Or even use this idea to create unique etched glass projects by using spectrum baroque glass, as she has done.
As you can see in Kay’s fabulous work here, the glass looks interesting which is called spectrum baroque glass used mostly by stained glass artists. You can see it has unique swirls and bubbles. This type of glass is said to be machine made and hand finished to create it’s unique look.
Moose Sandcarve Etched Piece Added Inside Stained Glass Piece
I really like this project where she did a 2 stage sandcarve etching of a moose into a clear piece of baroque glass. I think the light swirls really gives the glass some character, especially the background. It seems to really prevent a bland blank glass piece around the etchings.
The center glass piece is also circular. I assume she used a circular glass cutter like some of these listed here on Amazon.
Marlin Double Stage Etched in Blue Baroque Glass
A blue glass would work great to etch a ocean or sea scene of fish! This appears to be double stage sandcarved. Very cool!
Stained Glass Piece with Flash Glass Etching
Nice color! This stained glass piece has an assortment of color and a fish etched on a red glass piece in the middle known as flash glass. Kay shared this about this project: uses an antique red glass that is flashed with heat to adhere to a piece of clear glass…so when you blast – you want to be on the red side and blast away the red glass (thru a stencil) which leaves the clear glass underneath showing thru but because of the sand etching the clear looks frosted. The glass is called “flash glass” and it’s expensive! Flash glass comes in other colors also!”
Etched Blue Glass with Bubbles and Ripples
I like the blue glass with the etching here, plus the glass contains subtle bubbles and ripples which looks awesome.
Stained Glass with Bird Etching
This is a cool triangle shaped stained glass piece with a circular clear glass in the middle. Great sandcarving of a bird. The first picture is a close up of the bird and the second shows the overall project.

Where to Get Baroque Glass
I found some Spectrum baroque glass sheets that you could experiment with on Amazon here. They have some 8″x12″ sheets that might work great for a nice framed etched glass piece.
However, you may want to go a local stained glass shop to pick out a piece that it doesn’t go overboard on the swirls so it works well with etchings. It looks like Kay used baroque glass with light swirls and I would think this would be best so the etching doesn’t get lost in the swirls. This type of glass can vary and no two pieces are exactly alike.
More About Kay & Her Work
Kay shared the below details about these projects:
The glass on the moose is Spectrum Baroque and it fluctuates from 1/8” thick to a little bit more depending on the swirl in the glass…and you have to have the guts to go deep on the first blast, like 1/16” and then on the second “stage” you just frost the glass. Cut everything out first, then blast, then remove more masking and blast the frost.
She has been doing sandblast etching for many years to add detail to her colored glasswork. She has a website at www.oneilrockymountainart.com. She also mentioned she is here if we have questions, then please leave a comment below. She was nice enough to share her work and awesome ideas, so please give her some comment love!
