Multi-stage sandcarving glass is the most beautiful form and most advanced of the sandcarving techniques. This process allows you to sandblast 3-dimensional designs into glass and will truly step you into becoming a glass artist.

It is completed by going through a complex process of sandblasting layers, one at a time. You can go very detailed with complex designs or use basic drawings. When you are working with multiple layers, it can take a considerable amount of time more than the double-stage process. I think the time it takes is worth doing.

For a couple reasons, it is ideal to use a thick piece of glass for this technique:

• glass is carved out in various stage depths which can be more prone to break easily
• thicker glass tends to display the sculpted design better

This basic multi-stage project is quick and almost as easy to do as a double-stage project since the design didn’t have overlapping stages.

As you may know with any sandcarving technique, your work looks best when you flip it over so that you are looking at the design from the non-sculpted side. So if your carving needs to display the same way as the stencil, you will have to flip (aka mirror) the design first. We will show you exactly how to do this easily in less than a minute.
