In this post, we are featuring Gilly from Royal Blast in Dallas and his latest etchings of four different types. You may have remembered him in the past. I really like his work because he does such a wide variety of etchings and techniques.
We have talked about some of these types which he did consisting of:
- Double Stage Sandcarvings
- Half-tone etchings
- Surface etchings
- Photoresist type etchings
Double Stage Sandcarvings
Gilly shares some great double stage sandcarvings of two different projects- one shown above of some type of decorative fairy sitting on a moon and the other below of a pegasus and unicorn mix known as a alicorn. Both of these projects use LEDs to help light up the details.
Half-tone Etchings
Next he shared these two projects of a well done half tone etching which are based on photographs using the photoresist process. I like how he usually does these on LEDs also. I think if someone is going to spend the effort on doing half tones, it’s worth placing them on a LED stand to really make them stand out. Gilly showed us what the photograph looked like and the etching in the project on the right.
Surface Etching
In this type he shows us the surface type etching projects. Although the process is simple in comarison to the other methods, it can create very interesting projects when a cool design is used or interesting glass items are etched. He etched the first one on a nice looking mirror which might have some depth to it, so it could be considered a single stage sandcarving instead. The second project is on some type of decorative bowl with a monogram. Very cool!
Photoresist Type Etchings
The fourth type Gilly showed us is some fairly detailed etchings so I believe these may have been done with the photoresist process. However, you can cut intricate stencils with cutter machines fairly well to a certain extent as I have done with this decorative design etched mug and this custom etched flower on a mug.
Please leave some comment love for Gilly below and ask any questions! Gilly hopes you like the project ideas and hopes to inspire people to be creative in the sandblasting field.

I really love the two stage etching. I’m working on getting to that point but I find the process a little difficult to get it to look like I want.
I have Lambeth royal blue etching glass #1006B/CLB which I hope to sell on Craigslist. However, I can’t find any info about Lambeth glass which a bought a few years ago. I need to price it so that I can offer it at a very discounted price Craigslist. Two pieces: 18″x16″ and 9″x24″. Any ideas?
Thanks, Bea
